There are two starting points for the hike up Mt. Rinjani, either Rinjani Trek Centre (601m) at Senaru or Rinjani Information Centre (1156m) at Sembalun Lawang.

Depending on how much time you have, your fitness and your goals (Crater Rim, Crater Rim and Lake or Crater Rim, Lake and Summit), there are a number of possible treks.  Looking at the attached map below, you can see that the options are rather straightforward.

Mt. Rinjani in Lombok, Indonesia – 1. Introduction

Introduction

Mt. Rinjani or Gunung Rinjani is an active volcano on the island of Lombok in Indonesia.  Standing at 3,726m, it is the second tallest volcano in Indonesia after Mt. Kerinci.

Besides the satisfaction of reaching the summit, another attraction of Mt. Rinjani is to catch the magnificent view of the turquoise crater lake of Danau Segara Anak and Gunung Baru rising from it.  So even if one does not intend to ascent the summit, it is still a worthwhile hike to the crater rim for the views.
